In an effort to allow continued list management, The Computer has authorized creation of a new Mandatory Media list. This is said list. Posts in this thread should be dedicated to discussion of the list: addition and removal of items, and moving items into the Un-Mandatory section below.

*MANDATORY* Fun-Time Media List
This section of the list contains media that is highly relevant to life in Alpha Complex. It is recommended that you begin here when perusing listed media. Items coded in this style are from the list in the Big Red Book.

It seems silly to make officially branded products part of the below list, however http://ultravioletbooks.com is currently publishing e-books with the Paranoia name. They deserve a look for sure.

Fiction
1984 by George Orwell
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami (novel only)
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
Company by Max Barry
Feed by M.T. Anderson
Gap (series) by Stephen Donaldson
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
How To Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion by Daniel H. Wilson
Jennifer Government by Max Barry
The Illuminatus Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton
Kingdom of Cages by Sarah Zettel
Memoirs Found in a Bathtub by Stanislaw Lem
"Multifac" by Issac Asimov
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Road to Mars by Eric Idle
Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

Complete Works
--An author in this section has written many works worthy of the list:

Franz Kafka: The Trial, The Castle and others.

Philip K. Dick: The Peniltimate Truth, Clans of the Alphane Moon, UBIK, The Simulacra, Martian Time-Slip, Vulcan's Hammer and others. (Please note: there are many films based on the works of Philip K. Dick. Many contributors agree the fiction is the primary source, so only some of the films appear below.)

Films
--Many of these films are based on novels. If the book and the novel both belong on the list, they have been sorted into their correct locations.

1984
A Boy and His Dog
A Clockwork Orange
Aeon Flux
Battle Royale
Brave New World
Brazil
Catch 22
Children of Men
Colossus: The Forbin Project

Logan's Run
Soylent Green
The Game
The Island

The Trial (1962)

Games
-- There are many games that share ideas with PARANOIA. Here are some:

Asylum by Clockworks (tabletop RPG)
Fallout (series)
Half-Life 2 (PC game)
My Life With Master by Paul Czege (tabletop RPG)
Portal
RoboRally (Boardgame)

Songs
Placebo - Infrared
Placebo - Meds
Rush - 2112
The Alan Parson's Project - Eye in the Sky
Radiohead - OK Computer

Television
Blackadder Goes Forth
Can Jerry Robinson Fix the NHS?

Yes Minister

Dr Who Episodes
--The following episodes of Dr Who are relevant!

Happiness Patrol
Paradise Towers
Sun Makers
Trial of a Time Lord
The Long Game

*Un-MANDATORY* Fun-Time Media List
This section of the list contains media that is marginally relevant to life in Alpha Complex. Many of the media in this section are not wholly of PARANOIA and Alpha Complex, but have been deemed still to have redeemable quality beyond the "average" bit of media.

It is recommended that you continue here if looking for additional inspiration.

Fiction

A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge
Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Huraki Murakami
His Master's Voice by Stanislaw Lem
"Repent Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman" by Harlan Ellison

The Prince by Niccoḷ Machiavelli.

Films

I believe I have come up with a solution for the media which some folks think may not belong, but still has redeemable quality related to Paranoia.

Newly suggested items will always be added to the Un-Mandatory section, until such time that the list maintainer and primary contributors agree to move it into the Mandatory section.

To get started:
1) Please post new suggestions for the list
2) Please point out Mandatory Media that should not be--at least not without further discussion.
3) Please suggest Mandatory items that should be moved to the Un-Mandatory section, for further discussion, or permanently.

The battle Royale manga should be removed post-haste! Keep the novel, get rid of the manga.

Sorry I stopped tracking the media list from the earlier thread. This list omits Stanislaw Lem's 1973 novel Memoirs Found in a Bathtub, incontestably the most PARANOIA-like novel you'll ever read.

Of the many Philip K. Dick novels that have a PARANOIA-like flavor, Vulcan's Hammer is perhaps an unexpected choice. Clans of the Alphane Moon, UBIK, The Simulacra, Martian Time-Slip ... really, you're best off just saying "The works of Philip K. Dick."

What, no Kafka? The Trial! The Castle! Yeesh, did I forget and leave those off the bibliography in the rulebook...? Urgh.

In games, don't omit Paul Czege's My Life With Master, the principal design influence on the current edition of PARANOIA.

Thank you! These all seem relevant choices.

I might also suggest The works of Stanislaw Lem, as I have read His Master's Voice and it too probably belongs on the list.

Actually, someone did suggest that recently...

Ok, well, that has been added. I'm currently plowing through the entire other thread seeking items that may belong that are not there.

Do not hesitate to repeat something you previously suggested here though.

OK, at this point, I believe I have taken into account all current suggestions, all open vetoes, and I've demoted several things to the Un-Mandatory list; all based on comments in the old thread.

Is it the inevitably-poorly-dubbed English version of the manga that is lacking, or the original version as well?

This doesn't need to be there. I'm not entirely sure why i suggested it, now.

Comics aren't dubbed.

But yeah, the english version, not the japanese.

For byzantine plotting and backstabbing, there's no better fiction than Zelazny's Amber books.

If the criterion were simply "backstabbing," we'd include Othello. The Amberites have far too much freedom, far too many options at their disposal, to evoke a PARANOIA atmosphere.

Blackadder IV belongs on the Mandatory list. It's got just enough authentic military stuff (terminology, uniforms, rampaging paranoia and bizarre actions that make no sense unless you think the whole thing is some kind of huge game) and enough hilarity to be in the spirit of things. Captain Blackadder spends the entire series trying to get out of the trenches, but malevolent and insane forces from above (Captain Darling, General Melchett) push him back at tremendous risk to life and limb. Not to mention his gloriously incompetent friends and occasionally misplanned
acts of not-quite-derring-do.

You've also omitted Yevgeny Zamyatin's We. It's on the original Paranoia inspiration list and deserves to stay there.

You've forgotten Clockwork Orange as well. The movie over the book, since more people have seen the movie than have read the book, but I suppose if you want to you could cram the book in there too.

The obscure Clockwork Games RPG Asylum should be on the list. In that game you play a bunch of irrevocably insane people on a planet with no sunlight crammed into huge cities called Wards. Go look it up. It's so dark that it makes Call of Cthulhu look like a nice game of cribbage.

The William Gibson novel Pattern Recognition should be on there. It's got a bunch of odd ideas that should make pretty much anyone paranoid about dealing with others.
