Greetings citizens, and etc.
I had this great idea to run a Star Wars game using Paranoia rules, with PCs playing Stormtroopers instead of Troubleshooters. Instead of an all-seeing Computer, there's the all-seeing (thanks to the Force) Emperor. Instead of Commies and other secret societies, we have a variety of factions split off from the Rebellion -- the Empire is a big place, after all, and multiple "rebellions" are bound to spring up. And, of course, instead of mutant powers, the PCs have rogue Force powers, limited in application and difficult to control. Their mission: Seek out Rebels and Force-users, then kill 'em up good -- while concealing their own Rebel alliances and Force powers.
Stay alert! Trust no one! Keep your blaster handy!
All well and good. I still think it's a fun premise for a one-shot. Only thing is, I think I could use some advice on how to rub some Paranoia goodness of Star Wars: A New Hope.
The basic premise is that the PCs are those Stormtroopers sent down to Tattooine to recover that pesky astromech and its cache of stolen Death Star plans. Obviously, the situation is rather different than your standard Code 7 in Alpha Complex, namely:
*Everything (just about) is outside, and being outside is no big deal.
*Mos Eisley isn't color-coded.
*No lasers and reflec -- it's all blasters and armor instead.
*Everyone's from the same service firm: Armed Forces (I think -- this one's up for debate).
So! I call upon you, Paranoia-Live.net, to give me some advice on how to set this up. I eagerly await all your ideas. Well, all your good ones, anyway. Thanks! |

not bad at all...
one suggestion i would make is to keep the sectors... this is because, the different sectors of the Death Star or military base could be brought into play
also, would security clearance be involved at all?
my final suggestion is to set it in the clone wars and not the Galactic Civil War. this is because clones are already in play and the droids could be Frankenstein bots (in the world of paranoia that is)
overall, this is an excellent idea and would like to see it come to JParanoia soon... _________________ Name: Toph-WDK

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing for while they're on the Star Destroyer, but I'm keen to get them planetside (more on that below).

Yes, but more subtly -- I can't imagine approaching anything like Paranoia without it. Security clearance would be the equivalent of rank, represented by a colored "badge" of some kind on their Stormtrooper armor.

Well, the Stormtroopers in Star Wars: ANH are clones, too. While I love the Clone Wars period, the Rebellion is just so -- I mean, Tatooine is just so iconic. Everyone knows ANH like the back of his hand, but the Clone Wars, not so much.
Plus, I find that I'm pretty interested in those Stormtroopers Vader sends down to find Artoo. "Look sir -- droids!" Who are these guys? What's their story? There's a ton that goes on behind the scenes there while we're following Luke and Ben around. They disguise themselves as Sand People, they slaughter a bunch of Jawas, they kill Owen and Beru -- we don't see any of that happen in the movie. I want to see what happens to those Stormtroopers between the time they land and when the 'Falcon blasts its way out of Docking Bay 94.

Thanks for the feedback! I hope someone will do just that. I'm afraid it ain't gonna be me.

Very cool -- I'll check that out. Thanks!
So... I guess what would be really helpful are suggestions for giving some of these scenes in Star Wars a Paranoid vibe. Naturally, there'll be the usual briefing and R&D shenanigans on the Star Destroyer, and the landing craft should have, like, a real good chance of crashing. But what about some of the scenes we never see (keeping in mind that they don't necessarily have to end up the way they do in the movie), such as:
*Interrogating the Jawas.
*Interrogating Owen and Beru.
*Encountering and/or impersonating the Sand People.
*Encounters in Mos Eisley.
If I can squeeze the Sarlacc Pit in there, naturally I'll do that. Heck, even Jabba could get involved -- who better to talk to about what's happening on Tatooine? |

Citizen, rejoice! The tome Brave New Complex (hopefully emerging from development hell sometime soon!) will provide you with tips for using PARANOIA to parody other genres!
We considered including Imperial Stormtroopers in the book, but ultimately decided on including Redshirts (written by yours truly). While oriented towards another famed space opera, I think Redshirts will help you put together a PARANOIA version of some stormies. Best of luck!
EDIT: Yeah, I'm a bit late on this. Meh. _________________ www.ninjalistics.com |

Actually, do you know what? I ended up emailing Allen Varney, and he had some pretty great ideas that really made the whole concept come together for me. The game was a blast. My one big mistake, IMO, was treating the Stormtrooper armor as if it were... well, armor. For most of the game it was way too protective. Still had a few deaths, but not as many as there should've been.
I'll put up an actual play somewhere. I may even work out the kinks and run it at another con. I dunno.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up! |
