Dear friend computer:
I found the following message on a piece of paper, and I thought it was my duty to immediately report this treasonous activity to your attention:

Hi,

After a 7 year hiatus from rpgs (mostly D&D).
I picked up a copy of D&D 4th edition and have been DMing itfor the past 6 months (getiing to grips with the new rules sets). I also bought Gamma World (plays like D&D- a little bit easier) and with really wacky humour.

Now that I'm a little more relaxed with the ruleset, it got me thinking about other games I loved like Paranoia.

I now have found all my all paranoia material, lots of 2nd ed modules (even the "5th" edition rules.
I played Paranoia 1st ed, in the late eighties, and gamemastered 2nd edition. I was aware of Mogoose's Xp- and now 25th anniversary rules, but never checked them.

I'm interested in game mastering again, now, this are my questions:

-Is it worthwhile buying the new (25th anniversary) edition?

-Is it compatible with the old modules, or is the system too different?

-I always felt the 2nd system still was "clunky", has anybody tried using the D&D 4e/ Gamma World ruleset? (because we're used to t now and it would make the transition easier if we used the system we're confident in playing methinks.)

Thanks in advance friend troubleshooters!

Have a nice daycycle.

Sjap.

The Mongoose editions of PARANOIA, both the 2004 "XP" edition and the current 25th Anniversary editions, use rules systems incompatible with any of the West End editions. Mongoose has reprinted all the best West End material, updated for the current editions, in several Flashbacks hardcover mission collections and other supplements.

The official PARANOIA development blog has, along its right sidebar, links to many reviews of the Mongoose rulebooks and support line.

There's a D20 version of the West End PARANOIA rules floating around somewhere on the web, but I can't find it at the moment. Perhaps some other loyal citizen has superior Google fu.

Allen,
Thank you .

I will first try to get hold of that d20 edition thing
(because I own so much -old- material).

Otherwise, if I can't, or am too lazy to convert it myself, or I do not want to use 2nd edition again, I will definitelycheck out your work (the Mongoose edition).

Thanks for your answer,
Take care,
Have a nice daycycle mr. computer friend.

Citizen Midnight,
thank you very much,
This makes my work a lot easier.
I'll need to tweak the rules a little bit to match D&D 4e, but that should not be a problem.

(maybe I'll even mail Michael Shortt to see if he made a 4ed version).
Thank you very much for all your help.
Sjap.

P.S.just to be clear: I hope everybody understands: it's because I own a gazillion Paranoia 1st and 2nd ed modules, that I'd like to port them to my current D&D experience. If I hadn't owned so much stuff in the first place, I would definitely have bought the new (Mongoose) stuff.

So thanks again Allen Varney and Midnight I appreciate your help tremendously! Take care.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I also GMed (animated) TOON (a line you also worked on mr Varney...).

Last year, I ran a con game based on a generic fantasy mod for PARANOIA. It was D&D4E with new classes and powers/exploits. Players still had a quest, swords, magic, etc. but the world was run by an all-powerful king (The Computer) and magic was illegal (see mutant powers). There were even secret fellowships giving secret missions.

Overall it worked, but it needed improvement and it's now on hiatus until I can get Triune out the door. Still, if you're curious, send me an email (wjmacguffin at gmail) and we can talk.

I emailed the person who made Paranoia D20, and I believe he said he was fine with it being hosted on here. I also uploaded it on here, but I don't remember the link.

I'd say that people should read Paranoia D20, if only to get a mindset of the pre-XP era. Also for the hilarity of Anti-Mutants tolerating Registered Mutants in their ranks.

I played Paranoia XP and ended up throwing out half the rules. I didn't like the damage system so I replaced it with a generic hit points system. I also didn't like the commendation and treason points system, so I played fast and loose with that. I added a paperwork skill, as well as a couple others I needed.

The thing about Paranoia is that the rules should never get in the way of fun. Rules aren't important, and if something isn't working, it's entirely within the spirit of Paranoia to change it.

That said, the rulebooks are amazingly useful. Paranoia isn't a set of rules, it's a state of mind. And the rulebooks get you into that mindset. I wish I'd bought the book instead of checking it out from the library. I really need to get back into it again.
