So, if Our Friend was originally designed from a modern (circa 2005) operating system, who's copyright would be in The Computer's code? _________________ IC notes

Hmm... The Computer has the you-will-bow-down-to-me-and-like-it personality coupled with the we-know-how-to-run-your-life-better-than-you-do mentality inherent in all Microsoft products... so I'm going to have to go with Windows.
Of course, no self-respecting High Programmer would be satisfied with that, so you just know somebody snuck Linux in there at some point. _________________ Full Name: Konlii-O-TNK-2

LINUX is what the Computer Phreaks use (and of course, the odd high programmer as well)
Macintosh is much too stable an OS system to be our beloved friends OS source system.
And what, no mention of OS-2? The code that brought down those incredibly stoopid aliens in Independence Day?
But, the system with consistently discovered security holes, need for patches, integration with everything, susceptibility to glitches and viruses, it has to be Windows. Probably a Win XP desktop trying to run through a WinNT backbone (shudder...US Treasury actually HAD this hideous combo just after Y2K).

Since The Computer is such a highly distributed program thingie, I'd say it runs on many different kinds of OS, sometimes all at once.
Windows, Linux, MacOS, DOS ... and that's just the OS. Imagine all the languages that UV's have to know, going all the way back to Cobol and Fortran. I even think some comp nodes are wired into TRS-80s and Commodore 64s. _________________ IC note: Wields a laser pistol that talks to him through a tiny wireless earpiece. No, really. |

Heh. I just had the mental image of my old childhood Commodore VIC-20 acting as a sector's compnode, complete with cassette tape drive ("PRESS PLAY TO LOAD PROGRAM") and "fast" 300 baud modem.
For you n00bs, behold the VIC-20 in all of it's 5KB, 1.0227 Mhz glory!
But, to get back on topic, now that I think about it... it has the be Linux. In my experience, only Linux has the ability to develop the same kind of religious fanatical devotion that FCCC-P has for The Computer. _________________ IC notes

Windows - it's all-controlling, over-complicated bloatware, created and maintained by obsessives who are paranoid about people gaining access to their highly secret knowledge in c ase some form of freedom is attained.
The Computer is much the same. _________________ Jaffacakes: the food of the Gods (singular/plural/antichrist/antibuddah/your choice)

No way is anything except Windows.
As for the VIC-20, I can't imagine how we ever got by without internal hard drives. Yikes. |

| I'd say Windows, although recent lawsuitage over the Paranoia XP edition may make that assumption treasonous. |
