Provisional commendation point to Elle-R for her forthcoming improvement of the Wikipedia PARANOIA entry. That entry has always disappointed me, because it fails to recognize the game's historic importance in introducing rules mechanics directly designed to enforce the psychological mood of a specific setting. This approach, seen (before PARANOIA and TOON) only sporadically, later became pervasive in RPG design. The Wikipedia entry should do more than merely summarize the setting and publication history; it should assess PARANOIA's status in the history of the field. _________________ -- Allen Varney

I agree with you, Allen, but having the sources to back up the statement will help a lot torward that end. (What I did find and add so far is Paranoia's admitince into the Origins Awards hall of fame in 2007, that's a start.)
For that mater, if you know any articles that discuss Paranoia's legacy and impact (that you didn't write; need more 3rd parties!), link me up! _________________ [quote="2DMan"]...you really don't want Elle hunting you. There are a few more sites with reviews on them, RPG.net is only one.
There aren't any more articles that I know of, so that means there may be more.
You should contact Mongoose, (like I did) about S&P 16's article. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

Clarification: Gotta keep Wikipedia's criteria for sources in mind here, meaning (as I understand) not just any Joe-R on an internet review site but people with "credentials". And there wasn't a blogosphere in '85. That leaves a: period print sources and b: people influential in the game industry writing about it in retrospective. _________________ [quote="2DMan"]...you really don't want Elle hunting you. You're talking thousands of mags... I know there are some, But...
Yow. I'm not going to go back to the mid 80's...
I'd have to burn them to DVD's, and send to many. many P-Livers to comb through. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

Personally, I'd rather have them meet "Conan-R the Librarian"... the only clone in AC whom even the AF fears.
Late returning a book or vid? He'll literally rip your arm off and beat you to death with it.
That guy from the 2nd ed book with the hole in his chest? Girly man.
Improvised piece of rebar used as a sword? Well, only technically, since it's not really sharp, but seems capable of cutting anthing in half when he swings it. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

1) WTF where did you find an online copy of that? Won't SJGames get mad?
1.5) I have a "patch" file for the article. Where do you want it?
2) The Mandatory Paranoia articles were from W.E.D.G.E., which was an online fan site, West End's Devoted Gaming Enthusiasts. The articles were posted in full, IIRC, on either Varney's website or this forum when he called for outside text submissions. _________________ Wouldn't you like 2 BBB 2?

It used to be quite easy to get on certain IRC servers. You may be right about SJGames tho... _________________ Episode 5 info for Aratos-B-SCO-7

Why, This file already contains update, right after eleven pages of original Pyramid article. |

Actually, that was a scan I did of the origional magazine. They've since released all Pyramid articles online, for free.
And yes, I put the stuff in after, including the map that wasn't included. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

*Rubs hand together*
So. As part of the currently-ongoing website revamp, some things to consider:
- The GM FTP is probably getting replaced with a Wordpress upload/download module.
- We'd much love to expand our own article section.
- Many of these articles are in the realm of "abandonware" - out of print, rights owned by a nonexistant company, but still technically under copyright.
So, questions:
- Which articles can we safely re-publish without getting in trouble, which can we easily get gracious permission for, and which are going to be difficult?
- Insofar as many of these are PDFs, would people prefer just listing the PDF, or section of the PDF (I have the tools for that), as full text in the articles section, or both combined in one page? (I can do that too.) _________________ [quote="2DMan"]...you really don't want Elle hunting you. I am having a similar dilema with a bunch of stuff I am pulling together from the old gmftp directories. Perhaps we could re-publish things on the understanding that we will pull down anything that is contested and never re-publish anything which has had copyright explicitly attributed. We do none of this for profit and so aren't a potential revenue stream in any case. A notice to this effect would cover most fan/academic pusuits wouldn't it? _________________ I'm usually online Monday to Saturday and, sod it, most Sunday's too |

For me, who right now have internet access only on my work-place, it would be convinient to read articles from the site page(s). And this is easier access to players (and gms) who are not familiar with .PDF-file readers (though nowdays internet browsers have intergrated readers).
Also, that's the great opportunity to 'publish' some articles written by PLN citizens, but lost somewhere in the pile of old threads (some cool topics come to my mind like those created by Zild, Fool and Silent). |
