Imagine you are a designer for a computer game company and have been put in charge of specifying the features of their newest MMO. You are told the game is going to be based on a groundbreaking RPG.
The name?
"I'm sorry citizen, that information is above your security clearance."
So what should go into a Paranoia MMO?
This challenge will be divided into two categories: &
"Deviation from canon is treason!" In this category, the emphasis is on capturing the feel of the p&p game as closely as possible, expense and player base be damned! Features like "permadeath" and "purposefully unhelpful tech support" go here.
"Fun is mandatory!" In this category, you try to come up with a game that might appeal to Joe Warcraft, even if that means messing with the setting. The trick here is to capture the spirit of the game even as canon is compromised. |

There is a problem.
Another company bought the rights to do it, and did nothing with it.
From what I can tell, they promised like 6 or 8 other games, and made one or two. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

| Well that's a shame. Still, I suggested it more as a fun activity, not something to be taken seriously |

Besides, PARANOIA MMORPG already exist. It's called "Phase IV", or the PARANOIA IC Game, in the IC section of P-Live. It actually works pretty well.
I know the MMORPG company that bought out the rights to make the game, Soktos, has a game with permadeath, CoC. They also have the "Nuclear War" card game, a game with lots of black humor about nuclear war. I haven't tried Soktos yet though.
I'm going to type up some ideas, but I think that there should be no change to the PARANOIA game mechanics at all. Joe Warcraft can play Warcraft if there is no real difference between the two games, and besides, PARANOIA works only because it is unique. _________________

*Hopes the game industry doesn't read these posts.*
I'd include copy protection so prohibitive that, to install it, you had to travel with your PC to a special underground bunker in Antarctica to have it installed by a team of specialists.
Also, the game AI would be able to asplode your computer if it thought you were cheating. |

Just make it like Halo. Halo is awesome.
You cannot gnab or buy ceartain weapons or items unless you have the proper clearance.
Well, you could.. but it'll cost you treason points.
Allocate too many treasonous points, and eventualy int-sec catches on and you have vulture warriors mowing you down.
Besides the eminent threat of rival secret societies, rogue citizens, mutants, and creatures that you don't even know the names of. (More then likely mutated animals)
There are mudane threats that pose alpha complex the moment you signon.
Like say, a leaky faucet. Now, this may not seem like much of a problem. Untill you realize the water keeps growing. Eventualy, you will probably drown, and game over for everybody on that server. Unless you find the source of the problem and fix it, which may be unfixable if you wait around too damn long.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more paranoia should be an first-person shooter rpg. Where you don't progress in the strict sense, but you're allowed much customization and options in roleplay that you would not expect in a first-person shooter. _________________ [quote="Slice-R-Upp"]On the internet women are men, men are children, and children are FBI agents. Amen, brother!

On topic, I'd think of it more like Second Life. The Computer would be AI, but you'd have players watching cameras, being Internal Security, etc. _________________ ¬_¬

Alright. Idea:
-Make it like Counter-Strike. Everyone on same team though, battling against NPC commies. You get credits for completing missions, turning in traitors, and working for your secret society, and you use them to buy better weapons.
-Secret Societies can offer you treasonous weapons to help you advance, once you complete their missions.
-SecSoc missions and AC's missions are very different.
-Debreifing has more thought put into it than the main mission. Convicing the debreifing agent to terminate your fellow allies, for instance.
-Presistent world, where missions have real effects.
-Punishments for treason CAN include erasure/permadeath. You are going to need to buy clone backups to stay alive. If you get erased, you need to ally with your secret society and act as a MAIN TRAITOR ENEMY! If you get 'permadeathed', then you have to reroll your character.
-Game is based on player skill, and not on gear. _________________

Hmmmmm if I were to make a suggestion. What if we were to make a "social
project" of how we'd want a Paranoia MMO by- Oh I don't know...
Say... Using Minecraft as a substitute? Easily moddable for your needs and if
we worked together could create a really fricken cool server I think. Plus we
could, if noone here's a modder, just borrow other mods from other people
who made more modern mods. We shall call it: PARANOIACRAFT!!! Oh wait
that sounds too corny doesn't it. Oookay um.... ALPHA-COMPLEXIA-CRAFT? _________________ SMILE ALPHA! SMILE! |

I'm sorry, Citizen - This thread has been superceeded by ->THIS<- newer better one.
What's that? "Why is it better?" Because it was created by a High Programmer, that's why!
