Through a process too long and convoluted to detail I found myself making up some voice clips the other day for Paranoia.
My plan was to have my carppy old laptop sitting next to me as I run my game to play back pre-recorded announcements and such from an adventure. What started simple rapidly engaged me and turned into fun with sound effects in my editor app.
Thinking wider, if you could come up with a set of stock phrases that the computer might spit out at various occasions what would you want to have access to?
"Greetings, Citizens!" and suchlike.
I am looking at making these into either .wav's or mp3's. Either way short clips wouldn't take up much room on a HD or take long to download, especially as mp3's, and could be strung together as playlists or something similar for "live" play sessions and possibly even sent/linked to for use with J-paranoia. Just a little added touch of surrealism to better tortur...er..immerse your players. |

I had a friend who used an old laptop with a text-to-speech utility, it worked really well. When he had forgotten to spell things phoenetically nobody dared correct him (well, not after the first time).
He had entered around twenty minutes worth of speech, from the mission breifing to the R&D equipment listing, to various useful phrases for the mission. Such as "Citizen, what is your clearance level?" and "<<Clone name>> Is a Traitor, all troubleshooters are required to shoot on sight".
Aaah good days.

I highly reccomend the Text to Speech option. It's just so much more... Computer.

For some odd reason, I've always thought of Darth Vader when I think of The Computer's voice. Without the raspy breathing, of course.

Dimmer than average for me, I am using a text to speech process. (actually experimenting with a couple different tts methods) I hate the way my voice sounds so I wouldn't dream of being *that* cruel to my players (mostly because I would hate it too, thus negating the point of being the GM 
The original clip I did was from the Mr. Bubbles adventure in the XP rule book. The transbot's "schedule adjustment stop" had some text that was supposed to be read to the players and was coming from speakers on the transbot, I thought that TTS voice would be perfect for that. I got it down and fiddled with some effects to make it sound like it was in a tunnel and had it slow down at the end like power was dying. I ejoyed making it so much I wanted to make a library (for myself at least, though I could make it available for others if I found some one to host it) of stock phrases that could be inserted at strategic points during any adventure. I plan on also using tailored ones for the specific adventures, they just wouldn't necessarily be dial-up friendly size wise.
What I need is suggestions on canned phrases. What should my arsenal of clips contain? |

Well, there's always the standard "What is your security clearance, citizen? <pause> I'm sorry, that information is not available at your security clearance."
I remember reading somewhere (in the XP core book?) a "random computer reply for information requests" table. That would be a good place to start.

Yeah, but when I heard that I didn't think of The Computer, but a high-clearance citizen sitting at a microphone somewhere reading out announcements being handed to him. That was a very English accent you provided, you know!

You mean a soundboard? They're fun to make, and fairly easy aswell, it's just a sound assigned to when you click a button. Nothing complex, the only hard bit is getting the sounds in the first place, aside from that it's relatively simple.

There used to be one, but I lost it... and it is no longer hosted.
It had "stock" phrases, you hadda tweak the pronounciation manually, like it said "daycycle" as "day-sicle"... but it also had custom phrases as well. The interface was simple, but a little too simple...
It was called CCCP...

I know that post is quite a while after the original topic was posted but I have an idea.
If you have a laptop with XP Professional (not sure if Home has it), then you can go into Control Panel and click on Speech. There is a text box that you can type in and then click on Preview Voice. You will hear a computer voice read what you just typed!!
