Several of us here on the forums (particuarly those of us who only discovered Paranoia in the last few years via sites such as Paranoia-RPG.com) know how amazzingly little material is really required for the average person to start playing. I got myself (and other friends) into the game just based on a few summaries.
So my idea is to create a "Quick-Start Guide" for aspiring troubleshooters containing just that "need to know" information. Which would be a fairly thin book. Sell it cheeply (less than $10) and you've got an easy hook for bringing new players into the fold. (Compare to, say, the players manual for That Other Game (TM) which costs something like $30 not to *mention* the price of the suppliments...the cost becomes something that makes income-depraved, casual players like me hesitant to pick it up .)
The guide should at least contain (and not much more):
An intro "flavor text" (the usual Friend Computer/higher clearence clone conversation sort of thing.)
A basic description of the parts of Alpha Complex life the average troubleshooter may safely take for granted...except when they shouldn't. This means stuff like living conditions, clones, how much they should all love Friend Computer, etc. This may also include a general summary of the average mission, manditory bonus duties, etc.
Basic character creation rules and ultra-basic (minimal) gameplay rules.

The return and revenge of Elle-Prime.
Pity the targets of her revenge aren't around. But you'll do! |

I always thought some kind of extensive guide to equipment, terminals, weaponry and supplies would be very helpful. Currently you are picking everything up as you go and wondering what a 'scrubot' is. Although confusion is an important thing for Paranoia a player reference manual would be very helpful.
I thought a website would probably be the easiest way of covering it. The expense and difficulty of aquiring a printed guide goes somewhat against the 'You dont need to buy five rulebooks to play' feeling of Paranoia.
I think the best solution would be a Paranoia Players Wikipedia/Lexicon where everyone contributes. Possibly a dictionary version of it could even be built into JParanoia. |

That's why I wanted to make something that could reasonably be given away. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

Although I'm not sure if we're on the same page, short descriptions and pictures of stuff like the most common robots, computer terminals, etc, would be the sort of thing to put in the "things taken for granted" section. I wouldn't nesicarily advocate being *too* extensive, particuarly on the subject of weaponry...but to let the GM describe things as they're handed out to the players (and they *are* described quite fully in the GM guide).
As for the "you don't need to buy 5 rulebooks" thing, that's exactly what I'm going after...a single, thin, inexpensive book that would be enough to get the average newbie into the game. (Remember, not bying Offical Paranoia merchendise is treason.)
Just talking about it is making me want to attempt writing it... _________________ [quote="2DMan"]...you really don't want Elle hunting you. Ah. See, I wanted a photocopied freebie for just Playing the Game.
You want another project that's being worked on.
Trust me, we're trying. _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1

Thank you for your co-operation. |

Hey. This is the real world. I can give 'em hope, right?
Not revealing anything else, I swear!
Well, I would swear, but it's not polite! _________________ Name : Grey-V-MST-1
