On the sixth attempt to get people together to play Paranoia, they finally showed up! I guess that getting an entirely new group of players was a good idea after all. Anyway, here's the session summary:
-----
Our heroes sit around in their shiny new RED barracks and wait for their first mission. The mission alert comes! They saunter out into the hallway... in the middle of shift change at the food vats! Hordes of stoned INFRAREDs wash down the corridor on their way to work. Afraid of being swept away by the crowd, the team runs for the transbot station... only to see another wave of INFRAREDs approaching!
Three teammates push through the crowd and reach the station, but Jackie-R and Victor-R are trampled underfoot. Eventually a docbot shows up to patch them up and shoot them full of painkillers and euphoriacs. Nursing their broken bones (Victor-R has his right arm in a sling... could this prove awkward?), they rejoin their fellows on the platform. To think their teammates couldn't even be bothered to help them out. Could this be a sign of trouble to come?
Eventually a transbot arrives, but the PCs spend so much time arguing with it about whether it'll take them to DLA Sector that it starts to close its doors so it doesn't miss its schedule. In a frenzy of Agility rolls, three board the transbot, while Jared-R and poor Jackie-R are stuck outside. Jared-R isn't going to take this from a transbot, though, especially one with the temerity to catch his sleeve in the door. With a mighty wrench, he yanks the doors open! Jared-R and Jackie-R tumble in, and the transbot hurtles down the intersector tunnel wailing about its broken door. Jared-R is fined 100 credits and placed on probation. Whoops!
After arriving in DLA Sector, they get lost for a while, until Jared-R is able to get them a map to their briefing room. It's funny how the Computer and bots and such always seem so especially amenable to his requests... Anyway, they arrive at Troubleshooter HQ, where a cranky BLUE tells them they have to escort a transbot and its cargo from XRF Sector to IEG Sector.
What's the cargo? I'm sorry, citizen, but what was your security clearance again?
On the way out, Jared-R is pulled aside to receive his McD, which is designed to [DELETED - PLEASE SEE UPCOMING EQUIPMENT SUPPLEMENT FOR INFORMATION]. Then they get in touch with their team handler to learn what to do next.
Janice-O-IAL-3, their team handler, does her best to be helpful. Unfortunately, she is very, very stoned. Eventually she directs them to the local PLC depot. The team wanders around for a while, lost and confused. Waiting on line for the single open information booth seems futile, since higher-ranking citizens keep cutting to the front of the line. The attendants at the dozen closed information booths are totally unhelpful.
Eventually Janice-O realizes that the team hasn't received its Mandatory Bonus Duty assignments yet. She tries to get them to come back for them before going back to PLC, but the team balks. Eventually they browbeat her into giving them their equipment roster:
"Six flamethrowers, YELLOW clearance; six napalm cannisters, YELLOW clearance; one cone rifle, BLUE clearance..."
"Crap," says Daniel-R. "This can't be good."
Realizing that things really need to get cleared up at this point, they troop back to Troubleshooter HQ. On the way back, The Computer contacts them to ask why they’re not yet at R&D for their service service? In a fit of brilliance, Victor-R blames it all on Janice-O-IAL-3’s incompetence. Shortly thereafter, Daniel-R tries to call Janice-O to make sure everything’s okay.
“There is no citizen Janice-O-IAL-3. Please try again.” Whoops!
When they get to Troubleshooter HQ, they’re directed to an office labeled “Janice-O-IAL-4.” The newly cloned Janice-O is pretty twitchy, but she gets the Computer to dispense some drugs for her, and she calms down quickly enough. So the Troubleshooters sit down for the MBD test, which they get three minutes to fill out. Janice-O counts off the time, and when she gets to thirty seconds, Victor-R proudly turns in his test paper.
“Um…” Janice-O looks it over. “You didn’t fill out the back.”
Everyone flips over their papers with a startled gasp. Wouldn’t you know it, it’s a double-sided form? With the test taker’s personal information on the back side? A frenzied moment of form-filling follows, with the tests all but thrown at Janice-O. Seeing that no one’s actually put their name on it (except for Carl-R, who put his in the margin), she gives everyone a 100-credit fine and hands the tests back, giving another minute to finish up.
She sends them out into the hall while she collates the results. Hey, wait, what are those alarm xyrens for? Why are there all of these Vulture Warriors pointing weapons at us?
ZAP!
-----
Soon thereafter, everyone’s second clone reports to Troubleshooter HQ. It turns out that they’d all filled in the question about their secret society… Anyway, the MBDs are handed out, with Carl-R somehow getting both the Team Leader and Loyalty Officer roles. Then it’s back to PLC…
… and they still have no idea how to get their equipment. |
