I have an idea for zap games... the Random Genre Generator. I got the idea while watching "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" during the game where the audience calls out different genres and the actors play out a scene in that style.
The concept is simple. Number a piece of paper from 1 to 20. Write down 20 different genres, and roll a d20 at the beginning of the game (or any time you feel like it during the game), and that's the style the characters have to act.
Say, for example, at the beginning of a game of zap, we use the RGG. I roll the 20-sider and get an eleven. On the RGG, that just happens to be "Dr. Seuss Book", so everyone, the players, the NPCs, even Friend Computer, has to talk in silly rhymes.
Does that sound like a good idea or am I just crazy? _________________ "All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects." - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World |

Could be applied to any game... not sure it would work for PARANOIA except as a one off - like Buffy's 'Once More With Feeling'.
A better choice of game would be Toon... _________________ Check out The Underplex at your local store now!

Heehee.
I remember trying a vaguely similar idea once, the Troubleshooters had a machine with which they could change the room they were in to any other room they could think of. Hijinks ensued. |

No, that does sound like a really good idea, except that there's no in-game justification for why the game is being performed in that genre. I suppose you can always blame it on Commie Mutant Traitors.
And yes, I do remember PARANOIA: The Musical. What fun.
Show us the RGG, if it exists. I'd like to see what genres are on there. _________________ For the Glory of Friend Computer! |

I can totally see how this could be worked in - the RGG is an experimental R&D device designed to even further improve the already-absolutely-wonderful morale of Alpha Complex. Instead of it affecting everyone, maybe it's a helmet style device, locked onto one unfortunate PC. If he strays from the genre, the RGG gives him a good healthy zap. (Those who've read the newly-scanned comic books know the sort of thing I'm talking about.) Or maybe the whole team is wearing them. With this system, you get the added bonus of funny looks from the NPCs who can't understand why Troubleshooters are talking to them in haiku. _________________ "Your nose has been promoted to BROWN clearance, Citizen." |

| Or it's a drug, created by the Romantics, slipped into the Bouncy Bubble Beverage processing plant in the sector the PCs go to. The briefing officer, a Romantic himself, orders the PCs to drink some BBB "for the road" before sending them on their mission, which winds up taking them to the sector in question. So, for part of the mission, the Troubleshooters are the only ones slipping into genre, garnering strange glances at best. Once they get into the affected sector, they fit right in, and realize that the source of their odd behavior is located somewhere nearby. Now they have to decide if they want to continue their original mission, or break off and try to get their behavior under control. |

Both of those justifications rock! The expirimental equipment explanation is a way of possibly using the RGG on several missions. The B3 explanation is great for a one-shot game. I can just see the characters in debriefing for that one, acting so strange that Friend Computer has no choice but to terminate them all, and each one of them go to (or dance to, depending on the genre) the termination chamber, acting out the events in the chosen style.
Both are very nice, and fit in very well. I'll get that RGG posted as soon as I finish it. _________________ "All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects." - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World |

Hail is two syllables! TREASON! ZAPZAPZAP
Well it is in my mind anyway.
Yes, the R&D device is perfect as a 'morale-booster'. Well, R&D could develop anything and call it a morale-booster. "Take this highly volatile container of Uranium-238, citizen. It is designed to boost morale in your team." _________________ For the Glory of Friend Computer! |
