| Since it seems the Troubleshooters and Internal Security rules are introducing new secret societies, I think it might be necessary to reintroduce the old secret societies as well. |
Why on Earth, pray tell? |
Because this is the first time I've ever found out about Earth Mother, and I so desperately want it to be in my next game... |
It's rubbish, and its only funny use was with an NPC in The People's Glorious Revolutionary Adventure. Which, by the way, functions perfectly and in the exact same manner when she's not an Earth Mother member. There, saved you some pain.
Seriously, it was an awful idea, and if you actually want to use a similar concept you can do so without them. Just have a member of the Sierra Club or Humanists or something with goals centered around "natural birth".
Also: Internal Security already reintroduces a couple of the AP SecSocs. The rest are really just very specific subsects of others. _________________ IC info for Vic-R-DIN-1

Oh dear. I suppose you might be right, Aratos...but if I only thought about it before I sent the pitch to S&P. I suppose there are a couple of okay ideas out there in that list though, but they do need work. _________________ Silent-B-PLN-6

No, all good, non-dumb, sensibly conceived, not idiotic secret societies can inspire GMs. This does not describe the later West End societies.
The twin purposes of secret societies in the game are (a) to foster rivalries and tension among players and (b) to be funny. These societies fail on both counts. To resurrect them out of a misguided sense of completion simply adds noise to the already overburdened GM's cognitive load. |

I feel the need to defend myself, but I needed to think of how best to phrase it.
While most of the West End stuff were undesirable and not funny, there is still an occassinal gem. I would like the opportunity to find these gems and examine what makes a good secsoc - to explain what is not salvagable, and play with the ones that are.
Obviously we don't want to overload the players with hundreds of options for disposable characters - that would be silly and I agree with you on this point, but a few good and well thought out additions that compliment the existing would be nice. _________________ Silent-B-PLN-6

Some of the bot societies in particular don't seem that bad, but I don't know if they were reintroduced in whatever book it is that gives you the ability to play as a bot. _________________ Check out my band's album (Now on iTunes!)

| I was excited after reading the thread title, hoping it was about the idea of collapsed or eliminated secret societies. That maybe has some potential, especially if characters have former allegiance (criminal histories style), or some of their plans are coming to fruition, far after the SecSoc itself has been eradicated. |
