What about humor? Is that a prerequisite for an alternate PARANOIA setting? So far in the thread we've been focusing just on what makes for the paranoia, but PARANOIA is primarily a comedy game -- even if it's the dark, Orwellian humor of Straight.
Do alternate settings need to be funny, or can fear and loathing be enough to make for an enjoyable game? _________________ Pleasantville by Night, a horror-humor web game I created. Join a secret society and try to take over the city!

Humour is what sets Paranoia aside as being Paranoia.
I'm totally guilty of taking humour as an axiom that didn't need listed tho -_-;. _________________ Episode 5 info for Aratos-B-SCO-7

Humour is such a broad concept that it probably can be argued to be applicable no matter what.
In Diplomacy (board game) the real laughs always came from a stunning betrayal. Whilst the designers of that game probably wanted people to enjoy it I don't think they actually designed it to be played it for laughs.
Because so much about humour is in timing and the unexpected, maybe (in a game setting) betrayals are always funny? _________________ I'm usually online Monday to Saturday and, sod it, most Sunday's too |

| My personal opinion is that Paranoia need have no more humor than Brazil. The movie is absurd, and quite funny in places, but I would never describe it as humorous or funny. I believe the setting should be flexible enough that it can be run as straight or as funny as the GM wants. |

I'm pretty sure Brazil was outright intended to be pretty funny, considering it was a Gilliam film. _________________ Episode 5 info for Aratos-B-SCO-7
