Is NoryB still developing? Back in 2004 when I asked after the code he was talking about version 2.0. Also does he own the concept or was it a team effort? Just wondering it is even possible to reboot or if it would have to be completely different to avoid proprietary stuff.
The last comment by him that I see was in 2006. I haven't seen new features in years and there have been some things I want to change in the UI.
* make player UI more like GM interface (easier for a player to understand when he steps behind the curtain)
* simple combat window that appears INFRONT of application
* buttons for / \ ' ` actions to help player to learn the shortcuts.
* change from many text windows to using a single window like how the old log format combined pms and actions.
* Add player to player pms in GM window as greyed out.
Basically if WoW has taught us anything it is that everyone likes to skin data presentation differently. A simple feed based system with user skins and filters would do wonders for usability.
The current app has enough little details that back engineering would be a nightmare. (registering with central server, handling music, images, logging, etc)
I have been thinking of ways to make it work better. If the project is truly dead I may consider the idea of a bare bones open sourced architecture in the hope that others would eventually flesh it out But I really do not have sufficient free time and it would suck to lose current features. The app currently does a LOT of things pretty well I just think it could present data a bit better.
But if necessary a lot of what it does is not central to the game (images, music, etc) The core product is basically a point to point chat client. Logging, skinning, registering with central server are all features that can be added back over time. But only if the central concept or implementation is not exclusively owned by NoryB. |

Thank you citizen but your link does not connect me to a forum. In fact I get "The topic or post you requested does not exist" Could you edit your link so I can view the topic? Or is the forum a private forum I may not have access to?
I poked around a while before posting and saw a bunch of others talking about development but I never saw good data from higher ups (UVs) except to periodically state they are in contact with NoryB and that he owns the code. |

Ah, it could be that the area is gone now, as it got no where. There was a lot of discussion at one point about viable solutions, with a lot of suggestions and ideas like the ones you posted.
As far as I know, NoryB's not been around in a while though - it's unlikley as far as I am aware that JP will be modified any time soon, but on e of the odd things about requested features is that not all requests would have been done anyway - what seems like a good idea to one person is hateful to another. (For instance, adding player to player messages into the GMs main window would be annoying. In a seperate window, maybe, but when the GM is already dealing with lots of windows and goings on, anything that interrupts his reading of what's in the main section would be detrimental to the game.)
I do agree with the idea of being able to change the "skin" though.
I'd have bright pink with bunnies. _________________ **Insert Maximagotchi here**

The forum that once existed where Max linked to did indeed contain a great wealth of unconstructive arguing and irrelevant programming discussion, which is probably the reason it vanished. But I honestly wouldn't be surprised if development on a JParanoia replacement has continued in some form or another. Maybe it's all just going incredibly slowly. I cancelled my intent to build a client due to the quantity of perceived hostility I received
I did look in to see how the new client was progressing, not long before the last post in this thread actually... unfortunately information on the subject was only available on Twosday.
The existing JP client could theoretically be modified, but that would be dependant on certain IP circumstances. _________________ This post does not exist, evidence to the contrary is treason! |

I think you'll find we are a totally unhostile development environment these days. _________________ I'm usually online Monday to Saturday and, sod it, most Sunday's too |

Hmmm, that's quite a read by the look of it, but I do have the resources necessary to achieve all goals except getting licence to the art :p _________________ This post does not exist, evidence to the contrary is treason! |

In that vein is it alright to mention the relatively recent secret [DELETED FOR SECURITY REASONS] to JParanoia that I was told not to mention? _________________ For the Glory of Friend Computer! |
